Here’s a real life artist I found kicking around online.
Quilt Me Cross-Eyed
June 11, 2010 by RealLifeArtist
Karen Combs designs and makes “quilts of illusion” inspired by the likes of op-art, traditional folk designs and ancient Venician floor tiling. You have to give her credit for making the coziest optical illusions ever. I feel like I could fall off the edge of one of her quilts and land in a snuggly, Escher-esque world.
Of course illusionist quilts have been hot stuff for some time now. The adorable Adirondack Museum has a delightful example on their site of the “Tumbling Blocks” pattern, sewed in 1910, and this is a similar quilt made before the turn of the century.
This might be another preference that places me in the 1960’s, but I’d love to wake up in the morning to a quilt that tricks my eye. It gives it some backbone and makes the day that much more magical.
