A while ago a friend sent me this prompt: “Can you write me a poem entitled ‘Ode to an Awkward Boy’?”
Yes. Yes I can.
Ode to an Awkward Boy
Dear Awkward Boy, my heart’s aflutter
Though other girls think you’re a nutter.
You’re gangly and you wear your hair
As though you don’t know that it’s there.
You don’t play sports, and when you do
The jocky guys gang up on you.
But when you write computer code
You shine. That’s why I write this ode;
You’re geeky, and you’re often shy,
But you’re the apple of my eye.
Though awkward, over you I fawn.
Oh, take me to the Comic-Con!
I’ll be the Scully to your Mulder!
I’ll lay my head on your bony shoulder.
One day you’ll be rich, I know.
So off with Awkward Boy I’ll go.
Then, said friend (Janis) was inspired to write her own:
Ode to an Awkward Man
It used to be that all I’d see
Were boys so charismatic
Until I saw their love for girls
Was far too automatic
They loved too well too many girls;
My heart they’d always step on.
It made me think, it made me drink,
It made me buy a weapon.
But you, my love, are awkward, so
I’ll never fret again.
I know you’ll stay and never stray;
You’ll marry me and then
We’ll have some awkward children
And ever be adoring.
You’ll be so kind and I will find
You absolutely boring.
What more can I say? I hope you enjoyed ours, and I encourage you to contribute your own in the comments section!
