This is the fourth installment of extracts from Chloë’s Grade-Three Language Arts Notebook, in which seven-year-old Chloë explores the dynamics of inter-species friendships.
There’s just something so macabre about a chicken cooking eggs for a fox. I’m not sure I understood all the nuances as a child.
As for the bear saving the shark from the boat (yes, that’s a boat), the logistics are a mystery to me. I suppose that’s alright, though, given that the chart was meant to be a writing prompt (I’m guessing).
And the alligator and the human… well, they just like each other.

Monsters I Know: A Chart

Today I kick off a new column of sorts. It’s called “Excerpts from Chloë’s Grade-Three Language Arts Notebook“.
My dad is partially responsible for this column, because he somehow tracked down this notebook and apparently keeps it in his home office as “inspiration”. I’m home for holiday time and he showed it to the fam one day. Much mirth was induced.
Today’s excerpt: a chart entitled “Monsters I Know”. I turned nine just three days before this chart came into existence.
Expository fact: my teacher’s name at the time was Mr. Ireland. He was a fantastic teacher, and probably understood my little poke at him.
Notable features:
• Not one, not two, but three different versions of the vampire. So apparently the only monsters I know are vampires.
• My favorite show was clearly “Ghostwriter”. I remember this show well. It was the first time I ever made a point of watching the next episode of anything. I was devoted.
• I can’t tell what I erased to make room for myself as a monster. It’s a palimpsest of sorts, but my cyclops eye and Medusa hair can be explained by (a) the fact that my gifted program class was doing a unit on mythical creatures at the time, and (b) low self-esteem (since corrected, no thanks to certain bullies).
• As for the “heela monster”, I must have meant the gila monster… though my rendition looks nothing like the actual creature. Mine just looks kind of like Gonzo.
• I drew some pretty straight lines for someone who looked upon rulers with disdain. Also I apparently capitalized strings of numbers (as in the year, in the date), which actually tells me a lot about how I used to think about numbers: as part of my written language rather than as a language in their own right.
• Is it strange that I drew Ghostwriter and Ghostbusters but no actual ghosts?
And can I just say that my drawing of Dracula is awesome.
